This book tells the story of the protagonist Charles Bennett's decision to return to his hometown to end his life because of his continuous failures in life. His baseball career ended almost without a formal start; His depression made his wife unwilling to communicate with him and finally chose to leave; His daughter didn't want to invite him when she got married. When he found himself alone, his psychological defense completely collapsed and the idea of suicide arose. Surprisingly, when wandering on the edge of death, he met his mother who had died for many years and lived with her for a day. After a short day together, the tolerance and understanding of maternal love made "chicken" Bennett take off his remorse, forgive himself, and understand that only now can he have the courage to live.
